New book launching in October
Just to let everyone know I have a publication forthcoming. I'll post more details nearer the time, but in the meantime here's a rough blurb to whet appetites!
The Little Book of Wicklow
County Wicklow was the last Irish county to be created, and
many of the last things you’d expect happened there over the centuries. The
county is known as the Garden of Ireland and is breathtakingly beautiful. From
the smooth sands on the beach at Brittas Bay to the rugged rock faces around
Leinster’s highest mountain, Lugnaquilla, the county is alive with scenery and
heritage. Much of the centre of the county is an Irish national park, and the
mountains and rivers, hills and valleys all have their own stories. Myths and
legends about the county and its topography abound. Wicklow also has a long
history and was the scene of many important events in bygone days. The past
secrets of Wicklow’s great houses and other public buildings are uncovered in
this book. People from the county also excelled in many fields – some
unexpected – and their stories are told here. From the insurgent who held out
in the Wicklow Mountains for five years after the 1798 rebellion to the
landlord who helped to stamp out landlordism in Ireland, the county is full of
stories of surprising people. You will also glimpse a darker side of
Wicklow’s past with a look at crime and punishment and Wicklow’s wicked women. In addition, many well-known movies were shot on location
here. From the silver screen to the golden beaches, through quaint villages and
bustling towns, this book takes the reader on a journey through County Wicklow
and its vibrant past.
